Erik S. Ericksen

Mr. Ericksen
received his M.S. degree and B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from
Brigham Young University. He graduated from the University of
Texas at Austin School of Law. Mr. Ericksen is also a
Registered Patent Attorney and associate partner at Thorpe North
& Western.
During
his undergraduate and graduate education Mr. Ericksen studied a variety
of engineering subjects including separations technologies, reactor
design, advanced thermodynamics, transport phenomena, chemical
kinetics, polymer systems, semiconductor fabrication, fluid mechanics,
and process control. In addition, Mr. Ericksen worked as a
math lab tutor specializing in engineering math and as an assistant in
the Advanced Unit Operations Lab. He is also an active member
of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
As
a graduate student he studied in the field of statistical
thermodynamics with a focus in osmotic molecular dynamics.
This research involved using UNIX-based computer simulations of
chemical mixtures to obtain excess thermodynamic properties via a
unique semi-permeable membrane and resulted in a Thesis entitled Activity
Coefficients and Excess Properties of Non-polar Binary Mixtures as
Predicted by Osmotic Molecular Dynamics.
Prior
to joining Thorpe North & Western, Mr. Ericksen spent time in
Wyoming working on the production of baking soda from raw trona and
improving solvent recovery. He also has worked as a volunteer
for the Office of Guardian ad Litem in child neglect and custody
cases. Mr. Ericksen is admitted to the Utah State Bar and
registered to practice before both Utah state and federal courts.
Mr.
Ericksen’s practice focuses on the preparation and procurement of
United States and foreign patents in chemical, chemical engineering,
metallurgical, and related technologies. He has drafted
numerous patents in a variety of technologies including petroleum
recovery, chemical compositions, metallurgy, separations, reactor
design, oil recycling, diamond tools, laser devices, inks, and other
areas. Mr. Ericksen’s practice also includes preparation of
patentability, infringement, validity, and freedom to operate
opinions. He also has extensive experience in domestic and
foreign reexamination proceedings and licensing, as well as experience
in trademark and copyright related matters.
