About Jed Benson

Jed is a registered patent attorney whose practice involves various aspects of identifying and protecting intellectual property rights. He is involved in the procurement of U.S. and foreign intellectual property rights and has experience drafting and prosecuting patents in a variety of disciplines, including pharmaceuticals and associated delivery vehicles, household chemical products, personal hygiene products, nutritional products, other chemical formulations, biotechnology, materials science, medical devices, implantable devices, chemical and biochemical sensors, analytical instrumentation, semiconductor fabrication, various mechanical devices, and various other disciplines. Jed also has experience in preparing freedom to operate opinions, evaluating and preparing IP licensing agreements, participating in due diligence matters, and various other IP-related matters.

Prior to law school, Jed worked as a scientist at Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for six years. One of his primary responsibilities was to reverse-engineer branded pharmaceutical products. Accordingly, Jed developed a background in analytical chemistry, formulation chemistry, organic/synthetic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. Due to Jed’s experience in reverse-engineering, he was also heavily involved in performing complete characterizations of various pharmaceutical products, including evaluating products for potential acquisition. Jed had numerous other responsibilities at Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and gained experience with various dosage forms, including transdermal patches, topical and transdermal gels and creams, injectables, and oral/buccal dosage forms.

Prior to working in the pharmaceutical industry, Jed worked in a biochemistry research laboratory at Utah State University. His responsibilities included human cell culture, ELISA assays, Western Blotting, and various other responsibilities.

Jed broadened his technical background during his Masters program into the area of science instrumentation, which involved graduate level training in physics and engineering, including some training in both programming and hardware. Additionally, Jed spent two years during law school working as a consultant to various technology-based start-up companies. Jed assisted these companies in evaluating intellectual property opportunities, performing market research, developing business models, and securing additional financing.

Jed enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He inherited a great love of the outdoors that stems from being raised on a farm. He has many hobbies and interests, including music, sports, playing board games, and learning languages. Jed has lived in Brazil and Mexico and speaks both Portuguese and Spanish.
